FAQs

What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist

AEPs are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

Pathology domains covered by the services of AEPs include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory / pulmonary and mental health, and any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the client’s clinical status.

Danwin is an accredited exercise physiologist with the ESSA. Exercise & Sports Science Australia is the peak professional body and sole accrediting authority for Accredited Exercise Physiologists. ESSA is also the accrediting body for Accredited Exercise Scientists, Accredited Sports Scientists and Accredited High Performance Managers. For more information about ESSA, visit this website.

What is the difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist?

For a detailed description of an exercise physiologist, please refer to https://www.essa.org.au/Public/Consumer_Information/What_is_an_Accredited_Exercise_Physiologist_.aspx For a detailed description of a physiotherapist, please refer to https://choose.physio/what-is-physio In an exercise physiology degree, there are more studies on performance, physiology and effects of exercise in people who are healthy or with chronic diseases. The physiotherapy degree comprises more studies on occupational, neurology, and musculoskeletal anatomy, assessment, and non-exercise treatments. Both professions are trained to prescribe exercise/physical therapy and rehabilitation. It is important to recognise that both health professional have different skill sets, expertise and further training within and between each profession. Thus, there is bound to be overlaps between the professions’ method of treatment and exercise prescription as each professional broadens his scope of practice with further training and experience.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see an exercise physiologist?

No. You can see an exercise physiologist directly but if you have a long history of health conditions, a referral letter from your doctor is recommended.

Is Medicare bulk-billing available?

You are eligible for Medicare covered service if you are referred by your doctor under a care plan. Prospect Exercise Physiology provides high quality service with consultation time 1.5 to 2 times longer than the required duration stipulated by Medicare (only 20min).

Therefore, there is an out-of-pocket or gap fee client has to pay. Any therapy session that is less than 20 minutes is often less effective and thus it can be a waste of your time.

Dr Dan Chan treasures your time and aims to maximise the value you receive with each session.

What payment options are available? What health funds partners are available for direct rebate using HICAPs Go?

Any Australian-issued and most international chip cards or magstripe cards with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express logo, as well as bank-issued EFTPOS chip cards is accepted. HICAPS is available at the Prospect location for direct rebate for most private health insurers. At Green Fields clinic, you can download the HICAPS GO app (click here: https://www.hicaps.com.au/products/hicaps-go-product), on your smart phone prior to your appointment and get direct rebate once you have an account set up. Otherwise, you can claim from your private health fund with the receipt issued. The following health insurers are already on board with HICAPS Go: • Medibank • Bupa • nib • AAMI • Apia • ahm • hif • Peoplecare • Defence Health • Suncorp • St Lukes Health • Frank • Phoenix • Health.com.au • GMHBA • Qantas Health Insurance • Healthcare Insurance • Police Health • Emergency Services Health • Nurses and Midwives Health

Do you provide service to clients with cover by NDIS, Return To Work SA, and MyAgedCare?

Client with any of the following cover/plan is eligible to receive service from Prospect EP: • Self-managed or Plan-managed NDIS • Your Return To Work SA Case Manager agrees for you to receive exercise physiology service from Prospect EP • MyAgedCare Home Care Package

Is walk-in appointment available?

No, please call or email to schedule an appointment.

What should you expect during the first session?

Dan will first ask about your health condition, goals, physical habits and lifestyle.

He may then assess your flexibility, strength, health markers (e.g blood pressure, body composition), static and movement patterns.

If necessary and time permits, physical therapy will commence after assessment.

I know how to exercise so why should I still consult an exercise physiologist?

It is a question of the degree of expertise in the field of exercise. For example, anyone can throw punches but if one wants to be a good boxer, he will need be a disciple of a boxing coach.

Likewise, an exercise physiologist has a broader and deeper understanding of exercise to guide you in improving your health and fitness.

Is Personal Training available here?

Dan Chan provides personal coaching session but it is unlike a typical exercise session with a personal trainer.

Dan Chan has exceptional eye and standard for quality movement and breathing which he will coach you through before considering increasing the volume/quantity of exercises to achieve your health and fitness goals.

This approach reduces your risk of injury and let you learn to appreciate the movement your body can perform even more.

Do you have a gym to exercise clients?

At Green Fields clinic, there is an exercise studio and a functional fitness gym (available for use at certain times) at Green Fields clinic under supervision.
